The "Maybe"

Can you live in the maybe? Good question.  The truth is, we are constantly living in the maybe and most of us do not even realize it. How often do you ask something of another and not quite get the answer perhaps you were expecting or hoping for? Do you give an ultimatum or do you accept the “maybe”?

There’s a great story about how a young man proposed marriage to his beloved and her answer was quite simply, “maybe”. Instead of his ego being hurt or offended by her noncommittal answer, the young man replied, “Cool, well I’ll give you ten years to think about it.”  With that, he let the matter go and decided to put it in the hands of the universe. Two weeks later, the young woman said yes, they got married and have been together for 32 happy years.

The moral of the story is quite simple: you have to have faith in both life and love. Often our egos demand what is impossible to be given.  Sometimes, we have to learn to put aside our own emotions, our need for instant answers and let the story unfold.  There is hope in the maybe.  Perhaps the lesson is really that the moment of the “in-between” – not quite a yes but not really a no – might be the time the universe needs to get to the perfect and inevitable truth.
